HF - Hydrofluoric acid

Hydrofluoric acid is a solution of hydrogen fluoride (HF). HF is the industrial source for fluorine, a raw material that is used in polymers, by the pharmaceutical industry, and in nuclear power plants. High concentrations of HF in water can form a very strong acid, but hydrofluoric acid is classified as weak because of its lower dissociation constant. This acid is able to dissolve most oxides and silicates and is useful when it comes to dissolving rock samples prior to analysis. It can also be used to purify aluminium or uranium. Oil refining companies use hydrofluoric acid as a catalyst to produce reactive carbocations. In the semiconductor industry, it is used to strip coatings. In these situations and processes, it is key to accurately measure concentrations. The Rhosonics analyser Model 8500 measures the velocity of sound very precisely, direct and in-line.
