Mining talks - instrumentation series EP2: 'Instrument setup'

Posted on Wednesday, 28 July 2021 at 11:36

In the second episode of our series "Mining talks - instrumentation series", we interviewed Daniel Rioux, who is an instrumentation technologist at a nickel mining operation in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.

In this second episode we talk about instrument setup with Daniel Rioux. Daniel tells Frank (marketing, Rhosonics) that the positioning of the density meter is critical. It is important to mount the meter as close to the pump discharge as possible (within 1-2 meters). Besides, it is essential to make sure that the piping is just the right size. The pipe has to be the minimum size it can possibly be, so that it maximizes the pipe velocity. In this way there is no settling, because all slurries have different critical settling velocities where basically material will start settling out.
